Visit the Desert Rain Cafe for a Taste of Traditional Tohono O'odham Foods
f you are looking for a wonderful, truly local, experience, take a drive out to the Desert Rain Café on the Tohono O’odham Nation in Sells. (1 & 1/2 hour drive from Westin La Paloma)
Just an hour west from downtown Tucson, the Café is a project of the nonprofit Tohono O’odham Community Action (TOCA) and celebrates the bounty of the Sonoran Desert and Tohono O’odham traditional foods.
The café is open Monday through Friday, from 7am to 3pm and Thursday until 6pm. The delicious and eclectic menu features traditional ingredients like cholla cactus buds, tepary beans and mesquite flour in each menu item. Choices range from the traditional white tepary bean and shortrib stew to the contemporary cholla bud citrus salad and chia berry smoothie.
While you are at the Café, you can also shop at the adjoining Gallery, which offers hand made O’odham baskets, jewelry, artwork, books and traditional foods. If you have a whole day, include a visit to the magnificent Tohono O’odham Cultural Center & Museum, just 20 minutes from the Café on BIA 19 in Topawa.
Directions to the Café, additional information and the menu are at www.desertraincafe.com. For parties of over 10 people, contact Mary Paganelli, 520-235-4376, email@example.com, to make a reservation.
